About Darren
I have worked in the fitness industry for over 30 years, with a career that has included roles as a Personal Fitness Trainer, Martial Arts Coach, Yoga Teacher and Tutor Assessor.
Sport and movement have been part of my life from an early age, with martial arts becoming a particularly important influence. My experience has included boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Shotokan karate, which I went on to practise competitively.
A knee injury eventually brought my competitive martial arts training to an end and led me towards a different approach to movement. I qualified as a yoga teacher, and my experience across fitness, martial arts and yoga contributed to the development of Keogafit®.
Later in life, I returned to education and, at the age of 54, completed a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. This added another perspective to my practical experience and strengthened my interest in the relationship between physical and psychological wellbeing.
My work with people living with Parkinson's began when I was asked to teach boxing-based exercise to a Parkinson's group. Over time, this developed into Punch & Pause™ bringing together movement, boxing, strength, balance, coordination and cognitive challenges, alongside breathing, relaxation and social connection.
Today, all of these experiences shape the way I work. I don't believe exercise has to look the same for everyone. Age, health, ability, confidence and experience all influence how we move.
My aim is to help people find purposeful, enjoyable and appropriate ways to move, while recognising the connection between physical and psychological wellbeing.
I am a member of CIMSPA and the National Register of Parkinson's Specific Personal Trainers
